SPF 50 PA+++ Sunscreen: What the Numbers Mean and How to Use It

Updated 7 Oct 2026

Sunscreen is the single most useful step in any skincare routine, and the label can be confusing. Here is what it means.

What SPF means

SPF measures protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. SPF 50 blocks roughly 98% of UVB when applied correctly. Higher numbers add very little extra, so SPF 30 to 50 is enough for daily use.

What PA+++ means

PA is a rating for UVA protection, the rays linked to tanning and skin ageing. More plus signs mean stronger UVA protection. PA+++ is high, so look for a sunscreen that carries both SPF 50 and PA+++.

How much to apply

Use about two finger-lengths for the face and neck. Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, 15 minutes before going out, and reapply every two to three hours when outdoors.

Note: sunscreen reduces, but does not remove, sun exposure risk. Combine it with shade and protective clothing.
