How to Patch Test a New Skincare Product

A patch test means trying a small amount of a new product on a small area of skin before using it more widely. It takes two minutes to do and can help you notice a reaction early. Do it for every new cream, serum, face wash, peel or lotion, even if the pack says it is suitable for all skin types.

Why a patch test matters

Any product can bother some people, including products made from ingredients that sound gentle. Fragrance, essential oils, acids and preservatives are common reasons for irritation. A patch test does not guarantee that a product will suit you, but it helps you catch an obvious reaction on a small spot instead of on your whole face.

How to patch test, step by step

  1. Wash and dry your hands and the test area.
  2. Choose a small spot. The inner forearm, the skin behind the ear or the side of the neck are common choices.
  3. Apply a small amount of the product, about the size of a grain of rice.
  4. Leave it on, unless the pack says to wash it off after a set time. Do not cover it.
  5. Check the spot after 24 hours and again after 48 hours.
  6. If there is no redness, itching, swelling, burning or rash, you can start using the product, beginning with a small amount.

Signs you should stop

If any of this happens, wash the area with plain water and stop using the product. If the reaction is strong or does not go away, speak to a doctor.

Extra care for strong products

Peels, acid serums and exfoliating products need more care. Follow the time on the pack, never leave them on for longer than directed and avoid using several strong products on the same day. Our guide on using face peels at home safely explains this in detail.

Eye-area products

The skin around the eyes is thin and sensitive. Do a patch test on your forearm first, then apply only around the orbital bone and keep the product away from the eyes. Rinse with clean water if it gets in your eyes.

Good habits after a patch test

All Bounty Bliss skincare is for external use only. A patch test lowers the chance of a surprise, but it cannot remove it completely. If you have a skin condition, are pregnant or are unsure, check with a doctor first.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait after a patch test?
Check the spot after 24 hours and again at 48 hours. If it is still calm, you can start using the product.
Do I need to patch test if the label says suitable for all skin types?
Yes. That wording describes the general product type. It cannot predict how your own skin will react to every ingredient.
Can I patch test on my face?
The forearm or behind the ear is usually preferred because a reaction there is easier to hide and treat. For a facial product, you can also test a small spot near the jawline.
