How to Read a Skincare Ingredient List

The ingredient list on a skincare pack looks like a puzzle of long names. Once you know a few simple rules it becomes a useful tool for comparing products and spotting things you want to avoid.

Rule 1: The order matters

Ingredients are generally listed from the highest amount to the lowest. The first few ingredients make up most of the product. Ingredients present at around 1 percent or less can be listed in any order. This is why a product that shouts about one special ingredient on the front may only contain a small amount of it.

Rule 2: Water usually comes first

Most creams, lotions and serums are mostly water, which is listed as Aqua. Next come ingredients such as humectants, emollients and thickeners.

Common names you will see

On the labelWhat it usually means
AquaWater
GlycerinA humectant that helps hold water in the skin's top layer
NiacinamideVitamin B3
TocopherolVitamin E
Ascorbic acidVitamin C
Butyrospermum parkiiShea butter
ParfumFragrance
PhenoxyethanolA preservative

Rule 3: Look for what you want to avoid

If you know that fragrance, a certain oil or a certain acid bothers your skin, scan the list for it. Words like Parfum or Fragrance mean a scent has been added. Always do a patch test before using a new product, even if the list looks safe to you.

Rule 4: Preservatives are normal

Products that contain water need a preservative so that bacteria and mould do not grow. A preservative on the list is not a warning sign. A water-based product with none is a bigger concern.

Rule 5: Read the whole pack

Besides ingredients, check these details on the pack:

What a list cannot tell you

An ingredient list does not show the exact percentage of each ingredient or how your own skin will react. A long list is not automatically bad and a short list is not automatically gentle. Use the list to compare and to avoid known triggers, and judge a product by how your skin does with it over a few weeks.

Examples

Browse the Face Serums collection or the Korean Glass Skin Night Cream page, where the key ingredients are listed, to practise comparing products before you buy.

If you have allergies or a skin condition, check ingredient lists with a doctor or dermatologist.

Frequently asked questions

Are ingredients listed in order of strength?
They are listed in order of amount, from most to least, for ingredients above about 1 percent. Strength and amount are not the same thing.
What does Parfum mean on a label?
It means fragrance. If scented products bother your skin, look for fragrance-free products.
Is a long ingredient list a bad sign?
Not by itself. Many ingredients are used in small amounts for texture, preservation or stability.
