A Simple Night Skincare Routine: Cleanse, Moisturise, Rest

A night routine does not need ten products. Most people do well with three simple steps done in the same order every evening. This guide walks through them and explains how to add products slowly and safely.

Why keep your evening routine simple

By the end of the day your skin has collected dust, sweat, oil and, if you wore it, sunscreen. An evening routine is mainly about taking that off and then moisturising. A short routine that you actually repeat is more useful than a long one you skip.

Step 1: Cleanse

Wash your face with a face wash that suits your skin type. Use lukewarm water, massage gently for about 30 to 60 seconds and rinse well. Pat dry with a clean towel instead of rubbing. If you wore sunscreen or make-up, wash twice, the first time to remove it and the second to cleanse. Not sure which face wash to pick? Read our guide on how to choose the right face wash for your skin type or browse the Face Wash collection.

Step 2: Add a serum (optional)

A serum is an extra step, not a requirement. If you use one, apply a few drops on clean skin before your moisturiser. Under-eye serums go around the eye area only. Our Under Eye Serum is a 30 ml lightweight serum for use after cleansing and is labelled for all skin types.

Step 3: Moisturise

Take a small amount of night cream, warm it between your fingers and massage it gently over your face and neck until it is absorbed. For example, the Korean Glass Skin Night Cream comes in a 30 gm jar and is labelled for all skin types. A pea to coin-sized amount is usually enough for the whole face.

Step 4: Wind down

Keep your pillowcase clean, avoid touching your face with unwashed hands and try to go to bed at a regular time. These small habits matter as much as any product.

Adding a new product the safe way

  1. Do a patch test first. Read how to patch test a new skincare product.
  2. Add only one new product at a time.
  3. Use it for at least two weeks before judging it or adding another.
  4. If you notice stinging, redness or itching, stop using it and wash it off.

What to avoid

These products are for external use only. If you have a skin condition or are unsure about a product, ask a doctor or dermatologist before using it.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps should a night routine have?
Three are enough for most people: cleanse, an optional serum and a moisturiser. Add more only when you are comfortable with these.
Should I use night cream every night?
Most moisturisers are made for daily use. Follow the directions on the pack and stop using a product if it irritates your skin.
Do I need a different cream for day and night?
Not always. Many people use a lighter moisturiser with sunscreen in the morning and a creamier moisturiser in the evening. Sunscreen is the one step that belongs in the morning.
